Legal Clinic opens at McPherson; free services available
Dealing with legal affairs can be a complicated process, but having the right advice on how to handle them can make all the difference.
On Feb. 21, the Atlanta VA Medical Center opened doors to a free legal clinic at Fort McPherson.
Collaboration between the VA Office of Regional Counsel, The State Bar of Georgia and the Atlanta Technical College allows attorneys to provide legal advice / services to Veterans, including those attending the technical college and participating in the homeless program. The clinic is open Fridays from 9am to 4pm in Building 125. A range of topics, such as child support, mortgage foreclosures, employment, benefits, debt collection, and wills and powers of attorney can be addressed by the representatives.
The legal service was originally provided at the medical center on Clairmont. This move will allow the expansion of services.
“The convenience of the attorneys coming to the main hospital has been an invaluable experience. Most Veterans are just grateful for the services we are providing,” said Derenda McCook, Chief of Voluntary Services. “Many of them may have had trouble getting legal aid in the past because of transportation or financial matters, but they feel comfortable here at the VA, especially when their appointment with legal parallels the days they are here for medical treatment – they feel comfortable in this environment.”
