The Emergency Department (Main) is a 15-bed unit that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Treatment is provided for urgent and emergency conditions for a broad range of illnesses and injuries, some which may be life-threatening and require immediate attention. There is and additional an 8-bed (chair) Emergency Mental Health Annex for treatment of mental health/psychiatric emergencies.
Veterans presenting to the Emergency Department with non-urgent/non-emergency conditions may be referred back to their Primary Care Clinic or to the Fast Track/Urgent Care Clinic. Veterans sustaining major trauma are referred on to the nearest trauma center.
Veterans who feel that have a medical emergency should dial “911” to activate the emergency medical system. Veterans with conditions requiring emergent care who do not live in the immediate vicinity of the Atlanta VA Medical Center should report to the nearest hospital for immediate stabilization and transfer.
