Hospice Services

If you are a veteran who is eligible for VA HealthCare, Medicare or Medicaid and you have a terminal condition, you may qualify for hospice care.

Hospice cares for veteran with honor and dignity providing comfort and care for the veteran and support for their families during the end of life. Hospice care will help veterans who have a limited life expectancy by providing:

  • Pain and symptom management
  • Social, spiritual and emotional support to the veteran and their family
  • Medication, supplies and equipment related to the terminal illness
  • 24 hour on-call support
  • Respite care, giving the family some time away from care giving
  • Individualized plan of care that meets the needs of the veteran and their family
  • Bereavement services for the family members of the veteran.

Hospice care is provided by a team that includes physicians, nurses, social workers, home health aides, chaplains and trained volunteers.

Payment for Hospice Care

Hospice services are available for veterans through several payment options:

  • Veterans who are enrolled with a VA health system
  • Veterans who are enrolled in Medicare and or Medicaid
  • Veteran who have private insurance plans may be covered

Hospice care can be provided wherever the veteran lives:

  • Home of the veteran or caregiver
  • Senior Housing
  • Assisted Living and Long-Term Care facilities
  • Group homes, residences and foster care
  • Homeless Shelters
  • Community Nursing Homes
  • Community Hospitals
  • VA Community Living Centers
  • VA Medical Centers
